Solving a sustainable future, one puzzle at a time.
Discover how Keesing is committed to reducing our environmental
footprint while delivering puzzles with purpose.
Our commitment.
At Keesing, we believe in the idea of ‘healthy minds for a healthy planet.’ In recent years, global awareness of critical issues like climate change, social responsibility, and human rights has grown significantly.
These priorities are often summarised under the acronym ESG—Environmental, Social, and Governance. At Keesing, operating on a global scale means ESG isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a core focus.
We believe true sustainability goes beyond profit—it’s about creating long-term value for people, the planet, and our business.
Key focus areas.
Several key initiatives that align closely with our ESG priorities are already in place, including:
Responsible sourcing of paper
We prioritise sustainability in our paper and printing practices by sourcing paper from environmentally certified suppliers wherever feasible and by actively promoting responsible sourcing throughout our value chain. In Europe, we exclusively work with paper suppliers that comply with internationally recognised forest certification schemes, such as FSC and PEFC. In other regions, we aim to apply the same standards.
Social supply chain management (BSCI certified)
Through the BSCI certification of Keesing Media Group’s printing operation (Infopress Group) and our Supplier Code of Conduct, we maintain strict ethical standards in our supply chain, ensuring that suppliers adhere to fair labour practices, worker safety, and respect for human rights.
Promoting and leveraging the positive impact of our products on brain health
We actively champion the mental health benefits of puzzling by organising brain health campaigns, collaborating with associations dedicated to cognitive wellness, and partnering with universities to conduct research that advances understanding of puzzling’s impact on overall well-being.
Charting a unified path to sustainability.
We’re harmonising ESG efforts across Keesing to strengthen our sustainability approach, increase transparency and drive meaningful impact.
As we continue to expand, acquisitions bring valuable expertise but also varied ESG practices. We are harmonising these efforts into one cohesive approach in order to increase our positive impact.
Our strategy focuses on material impacts, prioritising areas where sustainability aligns with our core business. This includes maximising positive contributions, like the role of puzzling in brain health, while reducing negative impacts, such as carbon emissions and waste.
In 2023 and early 2024, we carried out a double-materiality analysis to identify the sustainability topics most relevant to our business and stakeholders, involving input from internal and external stakeholders.
The analysis considered two perspectives.
- Inside-out: Assessing Keesing’s impact on the environment and society.
- Outside-in: Identifying external factors that could impact Keesing’s financial performance.
By combining these insights, we are developing a sustainable path that balances environmental responsibility, social value, and business success.
Our climate goals
At Keesing, we recognise that climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing society today. As a publisher with a strong print heritage, we understand both our responsibility and our opportunity to reduce our environmental impact while continuing to create products that bring enjoyment, learning and cognitive stimulation to millions of people worldwide.
To support this commitment, we have developed a climate roadmap based on our 2024 greenhouse gas footprint. Our roadmap focuses on both our own operations and our wider value chain, where the majority of our emissions occur.
We have established the following clear, measurable climate targets:
- Reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% by 2030.*
- Reduce Scope 3 emissions across our value chain by 25% by 2030.*
- Achieve a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 by 2050.
- Source renewable electricity for our production facilities from 2026 onwards.
Within our own operations, we are continuously improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, modernising production processes and increasing the use of renewable energy. A particular focus is placed on our printing operations, where most of our direct emissions occur.
At the same time, more that 85% of our greenhouse gas emissions originate within our value chain (scope 3). This means meaningful progress can only be achieved through collaboration with our suppliers, logistics partners, customers and other business partners.
Our focus includes responsible sourcing of certified materials, improving insights into environmental performance, optimising product formats and paper use, and working together on initiatives that improve efficiency and reduce waste.
By embedding sustainability into business decisions, strengthening supplier engagement and investing in continuous improvement, we aim to build a more resilient business while contributing to the transition towards a lower-carbon economy.
Climate action is an ongoing journey. Through clear governance, measurable targets and transparent reporting, Keesing remains committed to delivering long-term value for customers, employees, partners and society.
Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources we own or control, such as fuel burned on-site or in company vehicles etc.
Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the energy we purchase and use, like electricity, heating, and/or cooling.
Scope 3: All other indirect emissions across the value chain, such as emissions from suppliers, transport, business travel, product use, and waste.
